Cokie Roberts, legendary journalist and political commentator, is our #womancrushwednesday choice of the week. ••• Cokie Roberts was the daughter of prominent U.S. Representatives Hale and Lindy Boggs, who represented the second district in Louisiana for nearly half a century. Her father served until he went missing on a flight in Alaska in 1972. Her mother took over his seat and served until 1990. Her siblings also made their way into politics. While she studied political science at Wellesley College, Roberts did not follow in her family’s footsteps. Instead she decided to cover the field as a journalist. ••• Roberts, considered one of the 4 founding mothers of NPR, began her career there in 1977. In the 1980s she moved to ABC News to become a political correspondent for World News Tonight. Roberts was a role model for many women journalists who started after her, and she was an influential voice in conveying what D.C.’s insiders and lawmakers were thinking, also known as conventional wisdom. She realized that, given her background, it made sense to cover Congress and the wider political world. On not entering politics herself, she told the Washington Post she had the “feeling like I’m educating people about the government and how to be good voters and good citizens.” Her ability to dispassionately report on political issues gained her respect from many in Congress. ••• Roberts championed filling the journalistic ranks with women. Her advice to women coming up in the field: “Duck and file. Don’t get all involved in the politics of your institution, or in competition inside your institution or with other people. Just do your work and get it on the air. And then people will see that you’re good.” ••• Cokie Roberts passed away on Sept. 17, 2019 at the age of 75 due to complications of breast cancer. ••• #womeninjournalism #WCW #WCWDerreriedesoie #womeninpolitics #womensupportingwomen #breastcancerawareness

I think a lot of us need to know and embrace the following: the path to success isn't a straight line. It often comes later in life too. We live in a culture that worships youth: not just the physical, but the cult of the young, wildly successful entrepreneur or genius. Wilma Mankiller was born in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, she became the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation in 1985. She is our #WCW choice of the week. Mankiller was a descendant of the Cherokee Indians, the Native Americans who were forced to leave their homelands in 1830s. In the 1970s she began working for the government of the Cherokee Indian Nation as a tribal planner and program developer in Oklahoma. In 1983, Mankiller ran for deputy chief of the Cherokee Nation and won. In 1985, she was named the tribe's principal chief. This moment was history making, as she was the first woman to serve as principal chief of the Cherokee people. She remained on the job for two terms thereafter, winning elections in 1987 and 1991. A popular leader, Mankiller focused on improving the nation's government, and health-care and education systems. Mankiller’s biggest goal was was to ensure the health of The Cherokee Nation. She was a consensus builder, working with the federal government to pilot a self-government agreement for the Cherokee Nation and with the Environmental Protection Agency. Her leadership on social and financial issues made her tribe a national role model and she remained a strong voice worldwide for social justice, native people and women after she left office in 1995. Mankiller, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998, the highest honor given to civilians in the United States. Mankiller struggled with many health battles throughout her life including kidney disease, Lymphoma and finally, pancreatic cancer. She passed away in April, 2010. Her legacy includes The Mankiller Foundation, named in her honor, which focuses on educational, community and economic development projects. “We must trust our own thinking. Trust where we're going. If you haven’t heard about Greta Thunberg yet, we are excited to introduce her story to you as our #womencrushwednesday choice of the week. Thunberg, who is 16 y.o., burst onto the international scene last year. In August 2018, she started to demonstrate outside of the Swedish parliament calling for bold climate action. Her movement attracted the attention of the media and fellow students who began similar protest. Thunberg’s movement, now called Fridays For Future, has spread all over the world and now involves over 100,000 schoolchildren. Her message requests that politicians and decision makers need to listen to the scientists, and for everyone to start taking actions in their life which would make an impact. It isn’t just that she speaks to her message. She lives by her message. Thonberg has drawn attention in the past to the greenhouse gas emissions caused by air travel. Instead of flying, she embarked on a trans-Atlantic journey aboard a racing sailboat from England designed to be emissions-free in order to attend the United Nations Climate Action Summit, which is scheduled to take place in September at the U.N.’s headquarters in New York. Sadly, her new celebrity has also garnered her attacks from critics. Some of these individuals chose to focus on her diagnosis of Asperger’s. Her response proves again why she is crush worthy: “When haters go after your looks and differences, it means they have nowhere left to go. And then you know you’re winning! I have Aspergers and that means I’m sometimes a bit different from the norm.
