Marie Curie, physicist and chemist, who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity( a term she coined) is our choice of the week for #DerrieredesoieWCW. Curie was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1867. At that time, Warsaw was a part of the Russian Empire. Higher education opportunities were rare, and sometimes illegal, for women in Poland at the time. As a result, secret courses began in private houses throughout Warsaw. These classes, at first mainly offered for women but later offered to all, were divided into for main subjects: social sciences, pedagogy, philology and history, and natural sciences. Called the Flying University because of its clandestine nature, Curie would go on to become one of its most famous students. Curie followed her sister to Paris in 1891, where she would earn her higher degrees. In 1903, she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry with her husband Pierre Curie and physicist Henri Becquerel. She won the award in chemistry in 1911. Her scientific achievements included the the development of the theory of radioactivity, techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes, and discovering two elements, polonium and radium. She also developed mobile radiography units to provide X-rays in WWI field hospitals. She was also a single mother. In 1906, Curie’s husband was killed when a horse cart ran over him. With two daughters, one under the age of two, she found herself the sole provider. Her daughter Irene would go on to follow in Curie’s footsteps, becoming her mother’s assistant and later earning a Nobel Prize in Chemistry as well. Today, the second spacewalk in history to be completed by female astronauts took place over a 7.5 hour period in the wee hours of the morning. We thought it fitting to choose for our #WCW choice of the week, the first woman to fly in space, Valenina Tereshkova. Tereshkova became interested in skydiving at a young age. She even trained as a competitive parachutist. It was this experience that contributed to her being selected as a cosmonaut. On 16 February 1962, Tereshkova was selected along with four other candidates to join the female cosmonaut corps. Tereshkova holds records for being the first, youngest, and the only woman to perform a solo space mission. Dr. Dorothy Lavinia Brown grew up in an orphanage, through grit and determination she sculpted her path, and became the first African American woman surgeon in the south. She is our #WCW choice for the week. Brown was only 5 months old when she was placed in an orphanage where she lived 13 years. At 15, she was able to enroll at Troy High School where, with the help of the principal, she found a foster family who would be a major influence throughout her life. In 1937, Brown graduated at the top of her class, and was awarded a four-year scholarship to Bennett College in Greensboro, NC. After graduating, she became an inspector in the Army Ordinance Department as part of the war effort. In 1944, Brown followed a childhood dream and enrolled at Meharry Medical College, in Nashville, Tennessee. Brown worked through a five-year residency at Meharry and George W. Hubbard Hospital to become Assistant Professor of Surgery in 1955 and the first African American woman to be made a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Describing her drive to persevere, she said "I tried to be...not hard, but durable." From 1957 to 1983 Brown was chief of surgery at Nashville's Riverside Hospital, clinical professor of surgery at Meharry Medical College, and educational director for the Riverside-Meharry Clinical Rotation Program. She served as a consultant on health, education, and welfare for the National Institutes of Health (National Advisory Council Heart, Lung, and Blood) in 1982. Brown's determination, and values helped her to break through barriers in other aspects of her life too. When a young, unmarried patient implored the orphanage-raised physician to adopt her newborn daughter, Brown became the first single adoptive mother in Tennessee, in 1956. In 1966, Brown ran for and won a seat in the state legislature. She was the first black woman representative to the Tennessee state legislature.
